How to Upload an SVG to Cricut Design Space (Step-by-Step for Beginners)
by GlowCrafted Studio
Bought or downloaded an SVG and not sure what to do next? This guide walks you through uploading an SVG cut file to Cricut Design Space on a computer, iPhone/iPad or Android, then sizing it and sending it to your machine. It takes about two minutes once you have done it once.
Before you start: unzip the download
Most SVG files arrive inside a ZIP folder. Cricut Design Space cannot open a ZIP, so extract it first:
- Windows: right-click the ZIP and choose Extract All.
- Mac: double-click the ZIP; a normal folder appears next to it.
- iPhone/iPad: open the Files app, tap the ZIP once and it expands into a folder.
- Android: open your Files app, tap the ZIP and choose Extract.
Inside a GlowCrafted download you will find the same design as SVG, PNG, DXF and EPS. For Cricut, use the SVG.
Upload the SVG on a computer
- Open Cricut Design Space and click New Project.
- Click Upload in the left-hand panel, then Upload Image.
- Click Browse and select the .svg file from the extracted folder.
- Check the preview, give the file a name and tags if you like, then click Upload.
- Select the new image in your Recent Uploads and click Add to Canvas.
Upload the SVG on iPhone, iPad or Android
- Open the Design Space app and start a new project on the canvas.
- Tap Upload, then choose Browse Files.
- Find the extracted folder and tap the .svg file.
- Tap Upload, select the image and tap Add to Canvas.
Size the design for your project
SVG files are vectors, so you can resize them without losing sharpness. Keep the lock icon closed so the proportions stay the same, then type the width you need. Common starting points:
- Adult t-shirt front: 9 to 11 inches wide
- Child t-shirt: 6 to 8 inches wide
- 11 oz mug: about 3 to 3.5 inches tall
- Tote bag: 8 to 10 inches wide
- Ornament or gift tag: 2.5 to 3.5 inches
Very small sizes make thin letters harder to weed, so do a quick test cut on scrap material before using your good blank.
Multi-color designs: keep layers together
If a design has more than one color, Design Space shows each color as a separate layer. Select everything and use Attach if you want the pieces to keep their position on the mat, or leave them separate if you want to nest pieces and save vinyl.
Cutting on iron-on (HTV)? Mirror it
For heat-transfer vinyl, turn on Mirror for each mat on the Prepare screen and place the vinyl shiny side down. Adhesive vinyl for mugs, tumblers and signs is not mirrored.
Fixes for common problems
- "Upload failed" or a blank preview: you probably selected the ZIP or a PNG. Extract the folder and choose the file ending in .svg.
- The design looks like a solid block: make sure the image type is set to Cut, and check that you uploaded the SVG, not the PNG.
- Too many tiny pieces: enlarge the design a little; thin details are easier to cut and weed at larger sizes.
- Text is not editable: that is normal. Letters in cut files are outlined shapes so they look identical on every computer with no font install.
