How to Make Christmas Ornaments with a Cricut (Vinyl, Acrylic and Wood)
by GlowCrafted Studio
Ornaments are one of the easiest and most popular Cricut Christmas projects. They are small, quick and make great gifts or craft-fair items. Here is how to make them on the three most common blanks.
Supplies
- Cricut cutting machine and a standard grip mat
- Permanent adhesive vinyl (for acrylic, ceramic and sealed wood)
- Transfer tape and a weeding tool
- Ornament blanks: clear acrylic rounds, wood slices or ceramic discs (about 3 in)
- An ornament SVG design
Step 1: Size the design
Measure the flat area of your blank, not the full diameter. For a 3-inch ornament, size the design to about 2.25–2.5 inches so it clears the edges and the hanging hole. Keep the lock icon closed so proportions stay correct.
Step 2: Cut and weed
Place permanent vinyl color side up on the mat, choose the vinyl setting for your material, and cut. Weed slowly around small details; a slightly larger size makes this much easier.
Step 3: Apply
- Clean the blank with rubbing alcohol and let it dry.
- Apply transfer tape over the weeded design and burnish it.
- Peel the backing, center the design and press from the middle outward.
- Burnish again and peel the transfer tape back at a sharp angle.
Blank-specific tips
- Clear acrylic: for a layered look, apply one color to the front and a second color to the back.
- Wood slices: sand lightly and seal with a clear spray first so vinyl sticks to a smooth surface.
- Ceramic: permanent vinyl works well; let it cure for 48–72 hours before packaging.
Personalize it
Add a name or a year in a simple font below the design. Dated "ornament of the year" designs are collected by families and sell well at craft fairs.
